The subtitle of this book makes its purpose clear: "Christian approaches to the mystery of Israel". Vatican II and John-Paul II have greatly purified Catholic theology of Christianity's old anti-Judaism. Taking advantage of this new vision, this book represents an essay of comprehension in Catholic theology of the vocation of Jews in its permanence, even after Christ, outside and within the Church. It strives to say, in the light of the Old and New Testaments, what the Christian faith teaches about the role of the Jewish people in God's plan. In 1987, the author directed the publication of a collective work by a group of Christian theologians entitled L'Unique Israël de Dieu » (today out of print), which had the same subtitle as this book. This one resumes its essential contributions and adds what the author's theological research has allowed him to develop since then, thanks to his collaboration as a consultant expert in the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" and two colloquiums at the Vatican (on anti-Judaism in the Christian world and the Inquisition), which prepared John-Paul II's act of repentance in 2000 thank also to his implication in the search for an ecclesial status for Catholic Jews in the Holy Land and in dialogue with Messianic Jewish leaders and theologians."
